A Sample Day at Work

A sample day might look a bit like this: Get in at 8:30AM. On the way to your desk, help someone choose the best cell phone for their upcoming international trip. After figuring out what would work best for them, you make it to your desk to drop off your things and go get a cup of coffee and some breakfast from the kitchen. While the coffee is brewing you walk through some possible troubleshooting steps for an electrical engineer who is having some USB connectivity troubles in Windows 7 64bit running inside a Mac OSX VMWare Fusion virtual machine.

Once back at your desk, you check the ticket queue. You create few active directory accounts, grant and remove some access to a few projects using NTFS permissions and a new group you just made, and write up a new how to wiki article on connecting an iPad to WebDav (because you got three questions about it in one week and you felt it needed a wiki page given increased demand).

Right about then you and the rest of the IT Martial Artists group up for a short chat. You hear what others are up to, and have a chance to tell about the progress on your new script that will push out and install .pkg files to Macs when they are seen on the network. You have a question about how to best do one part of that, and the IT Ninja gives you a few tips that will end up working out great. Back to business where you image a few MacBook Pros for some new interns starting next week. Just then a few emails start flying about some of the security pitfalls of DropBox. Having been on top of how to use that tool with local encryption, you find a few “how to” links and send it out to the masses – helping to keep people’s personal data secure “in the cloud”.

After a yummy lunch downtown with friends from the office, you are back at your Mac .pkg installer script. It is getting close to 3PM now, and you remember that it is your turn to check all of the conference spaces to make sure the IT equipment are all in tip top shape. You notice that one of the big screen TVs has a bad picture and so after a quick conversation with the IT Sensei, you find a good TV and order it so it will be in place for tomorrow’s client meeting. Before heading home for the day, you decide that you want to practice your rock climbing and get in a few routes with some co-workers. You are in the elevator and just a block away from the bus tunnel to catch your afternoon bus.
