Data-driven waste collection

Project Overview: 

Compology is rethinking waste management. This small sensor lives in dumpsters, monitors waste volume and transmits information to efficiently route collection trucks, thus reducing the number of miles driven and allowing the development of actionable metrics to help reduce waste sent to landfills. Our team of Electrical, Mechanical, RF, and Firmware Engineers worked to develop the sensor from Architecture through Manufacturing Readiness. 

Key Challenges: 

The harsh operating environment of a dumpster provided the most challenges in developing the device. Dumpsters are thrown around, have heavy items thrown in them, fill with water and get really hot. Our team worked to ensure the small device was rugged enough to perform in this environment, which included maintaining cellular connectivity and long battery life. Additionally, the team worked within a tight time frame, developing the product quickly allowing Compology to successfully fulfill orders just six months after Architecture.
